Which is better: Ebooks or the classic physical book? Well, although it boils down to personal preference, I am going to go into the pros and cons of both.
Pros of physical books: despite the fact that the pro list is short. Even I can agree that these are good points for choosing physical books.
Forever yours: a downside to ebooks is the upside to classic books; to be honest I’m not sure how you lose ebooks. My only guess is that the book gets removed from the app by either the author or by the app. But if you get a physical book you never have to worry about that, it is yours even if it gets “banned” or is no longer being sold.
No blue light: if you are prone to headaches or you just want a break from the harsh fluorescent lights then I would stick to physical books with a little lamp for extra light.
Trophies and decor: If you like showing off your books you have read or you would like to be able to look around your room and see all of the books you have read. Maybe you like to see the pretty covers of your books; then classic is the way to go for you.
Pros of Ebooks/Ereaders:
Can change font: I’m not sure how often or how many people use this feature but it does help if you need a certain font to concentrate.
Easy to travel with: going to work, visit family, or on a road trip when ereaders win. You don’t have to worry about running out of books or have to carry a whole heavy bag full of books, just grab your ereader and charger and you are on your way
Never have to wait. Okay imagine you finish your book, you don’t have any more books and you don’t want to or can’t reread one of your old books but you also can’t get to the bookstore well don’t worry just purchase a book through your ebook app and just like that you have a new book in the palm of your hand. Instant download, no waiting.
Usually cheaper: when I go on amazon to look for books I have noticed most of the time Ebooks are cheaper than physical books in the book store or that you order.
customize it: I have seen a lot of people decorate the inside of the clear case on their ereaders so that they can change the theme when and how they want. So even if you decide on an ereader don’t think you have to have a boring case aka cover.
Built in dictionary: although it is probably just as easy to pull out your phone and look up a word or phrase, ereaders have them built right in just tap or hold down the word you want to look up and there is the definition you don’t even have to leave your book.
Cons of physical books:
Bookworms!!!: Did you know book worms are a real thing and if they get in your books they can destroy them. Don’t worry there are some ways to deter bookworms. 1. Dehumidifiers try to keep the humidity low where you keep your books, 2. Clean books and bookshelf regularly, and 3. Mothballs but if you want something less smelly you can try black pepper, diatomaceous earth around your bookshelf or cinnamon and clover can be deturants. If you decide to have a collection of books I would highly suggest doing more research about bookworms.
Cons of Ereaders:
Needs to be charged. One of the biggest downsides to anything digital is it needs a charger and if you don’t forget to charge your ereader or forget the charger, it will still die eventually and if you are in the middle of your book when it does and you don’t have another device for ebooks then you will probably end up getting bored out of your mind.
Potential glitches. Although it is rare we all know with technology there is the risk of glitches.
Overlapping:
buy both: duo to all of the pros and cons of each many people decided to get both. Exp. you read the book on your ereader if you like it then you buy the physical version. Or you have the ereader for on the go and read physical books at home.
reduced distractions: this was also going to go in the pros list for physical book but if you are like me it really won’t matter if you have an ereader or a physical book because you will get distracted either way, also it felt like it depend on what you are using for a ereader if you are using a phone, ipad, or tablet then I feel like you are more likely to distracted by games and apps then you would if you have for example a kindle.
Types of Ereaders: there are a few different Ereader brands to choose from.
kindle, kobo, and BOOX palma. Kindle is the most popular. But I prefer kobo although it doesn’t come with the kindle app and as far as i know can’t so it takes an extra step to download books but the book should be yours unlike using kindle. Palma is phone sized with a black and white screen.
Audiobooks: If you are a busy person that doesn’t have a lot of time to sit down and read a book but you enjoy a good story. Then I would highly suggest audiobooks.
My opinions:
I personally prefer Ebooks. I have dyslexia so I struggle with reading and everytime I try to take on a physical book, nine out of ten times I fail and can’t finish it. ebooks/ereaders are less overwhelming for me. I also live in a tiny home and saving space is essential.
If you are worried about me being biased, don’t be, I have done extra research so I could make sure both sides were as equal as possible.
“Banned books.” I’m not going to go too deep into this topic because if you read my introduction post then you know I don’t talk about politics in my writing. But I believe that “banned books” are just a marketing strategy. A few years ago it was going around that Dr.Seuss books were being banned so everyone started buying them up before the ‘ban’. About two months ago I saw a whole display of Dr.Seuss books at the store.
